Chapter Nine

Miles

Miles didn’t look for Ben after that. Once he spotted Marcy in her gift shop without a smile on her face, he knew she’d failed to change Ben’s mind. Miles had hoped that just by seeing him, Ben would’ve had a moment’s hesitation, but even as he took a bit of lunch to Ben, there was no mistaking the determination in his eyes. The challenge he’d placed for later in the evening was still at the front of his mind, festering and probably strengthening his bear.

Miles had never seen a bear fight, but he knew how wolves fought, and most times, it wasn’t fair. He didn’t doubt Cale keeping to the code most challenges followed. As for the rest of the pack, he worried some might interfere.

The entire pack would be present, encircling the pair as they fought. If Cale lost the upper hand, Miles knew a few of the wolves would jump in. Without being a wolf himself, he’d never be able to protect his mate.

Knowing that hurt most of all. No matter how many challenges they faced, Miles would never be able to protect Ben the same way he’d done for him. He didn’t have superhuman strength. He had no magic, or psychic abilities to call his own. He couldn’t shift like his family or run as a wolf. Unlike all of the other members of his pack, Miles was human. Slow, weak, and far too emotional according to his uncle.

Wiping his eyes off on the top of his sleeves, Miles wrapped up the rest of dinner, then closed up shop. Marcy had already closed, the light from the setting sun gleaming off the windows of the gift shop. Soon, everyone would gather for dinner, sharing a meal as a pack the same way they always did.

Only this time, Miles would have to speak up. This time, he’d have to extend Ben’s challenge to his alpha.

“Thinking of running away?” Marcy asked as she rounded the corner, blocking Miles’ escape when he tried to leave the kitchen.

“I wasn’t—”

“I know a frightened rabbit when I see one,” she said, her smile genuine. “You know he’d send the pack after you as soon as he realized you were gone. He cares about you a great deal.”

Miles swallowed around the lump in his throat, the tears he’d been fighting all afternoon running down his cheeks. “Isn’t there any way we can stop this?”

Marcy shook her head, then took him in her arms. “Cale will never speak things through with your bonded. It doesn’t matter who he is to you, especially not when he also happens to be the son of one we used to call friend.”

“This is so stupid,” he spat out, fisting his hands against her chest. “Holding a grudge this long over someone else’s choice to protect their family?”

“Allies are supposed to support one another, no matter what. When Ben’s father denied Cale’s request for protection, that alliance was lost. There is very little you or I could ever do to change his mind.
